ASCH Teaching & Consultation Workshop (TCW)

ASCH Educational Training

ASCH educational and training programming includes a wide variety of offerings for health care professionals interested in becoming familiar and proficient with the range of clinical hypnosis knowledge and skills. ASCH educational and training offerings range from Level 1 Workshops for those health care professionals wishing to become familiar, comfortable, and competent with a foundational understanding of concepts and applied clinical skills, through the advanced knowledge, skills, and applications of Level 2 workshops, to highly specialized training in specific applied areas included in Advanced workshops.  This series of training experiences provide foundational support for other ASCH educational and training programs including a twenty hours Individualized Consultation (IC) in individual or workshop format, and a ten-hour TCW Workshop.

Teaching and Consultation Workshop (TCW) Overview

TCW is a ten-hour workshop designed for those individuals who have attained ASCH Certification (including completion of Level 1 and Level 2 ASCH-sponsored or ASCH-approved workshops and completion of twenty hours of Individualized Consultation (IC) (individual or workshop format).  Completion of TCW is required, along with other education and training programs and certification noted above, and continued use of clinical hypnosis in professional practice, in order to apply for and attain ASCH Approved Consultant status. Faculty members for TCW workshops are highly accomplished exceedingly well-trained and experienced clinicians, and respected educators and trainers.

The TCW includes an introduction that addresses professional continuing education standards, workshop learning objectives, and encouragement of active participant engagement throughout the workshop.  Major topic areas of training include facilitation of learning environments, principles, and characteristics of adult learning (andragogy), development of experience-level didactic presentations, including quantifiable learning objectives, organization of clinical hypnosis training workshops and small group practice sessions, careful selection of faculty, and management of unusual training and consultation situations.  Additionally, a review of ASCH Standards of Training, especially Levels 1 and Level 2 workshop training, including optimization of workshop participant and/or patient safety with respect to appropriate re-alerting and re-orienting, is emphasized. Finally, there is a review of learning contract responsibilities, case consultation, providing useful and meaningful feedback to those with whom one is consulting, the use and documentation of adjunct consultants, and ethical considerations.

Curriculum

SECTION ONE: Workshop Overview of Foundational Elements

  • Introduction of Workshop Participants and Faculty
  • Introduction to Purpose and Process of Workshop
  • Establishing Familiarity and Concurrence with the ASCH Standards of Training (SoT)
  • Understanding Adult Education (Andragogy) Theories and Styles
  • Understanding Your Personal Style of Learning and Educating/Training

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the purposes of the sequence of the ASCH Standards of Training
  2. Describe the concept of spiral learning
  3. Describe Knowles’ principles of adult learning and education
  4. Describe the participants’ personal styles of learning and education and how they impact education/training of clinical hypnosis

 

SECTION TWO: Development and Presentation of Clinical Hypnosis Workshops; Small Group Workshop Components; and the Importance of Participant Safety

  • Planning an ASCH-ERF Sponsored / ASCH-Approved Workshop in Clinical Hypnosis (Spiral Education; Appropriate Sequencing; Purpose of repetition throughout the educational workshop; Development of appropriate learning objectives)
  • Group Developmental Stages; Group Time Management; Documentation of Group Process and Group Member Progress
  • The Importance of Small Group Experiences in Clinical Hypnosis Workshops

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of repetition in adult education
  2. Describe the importance of appropriate learning objectives and distinguish between helpful and appropriate and non-contributory learning objectives
  3. Describe the importance of small group practice experiences in clinical hypnosis training and the documentation of such
  4. Describe the importance of limiting the size of small group practice sessions and of the specified, rotating roles of small group participants

 

SECTION THREE: Workshop Faculty Recruitment, Selection, and Assignment(s); Optimizing Workshop Participant Safety

  • Understanding the Importance of Workshop Participant Safety and Threats
  • Identification, Selection, and Progressive Inclusion of Workshop Faculty; Characteristics of Effective Faculty / Teachers; Characteristics of effective leaders; Leaders’ missteps to avoid

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Describe two elements of workshop participant safety and why each is important
  2. Describe one standardized clinical hypnosis re-alerting/re-orienting assessment instrument
  3. Describe at least three important factors in the selection of appropriate faculty for clinical hypnosis workshops
  4. List at least five important characteristics of effective leaders/ workshop faculty members

 

SECTION FOUR: Consultation and the ASCH Certification Process

  • Consultation; Understanding the ASCH Individualized Consultation Options
  • Importance and Appropriate Inclusion of Evaluation and Feedback
  • Becoming an ASCH Approved Consultant

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Define consultation and how the consultation process differs from clinical supervision
  2. Describe at two elements of effective feedback
  3. Describe the required elements of the process of becoming an ASCH Approved Consultant

  • Changing Dates. ASCH will honor one registration transfer.  Transfer requests must be made in writing, to education@asch.net, by July 5.  Changes requested after that date will be treated as a cancellation.
  • Credit Card Payments. Registration payments must be made online and received by July 5.  The ASCH Registrar will send reminders of the due date will in advance.  The Registrants seat will be relinquished if payment is not received by this date.
  • Cancellations. Cancellations must be made in writing to education@asch.net. No cancellations will be taken by phone. Cancellations made by July 5 will receive a full refund minus a $50 administrative fee. No refunds will be made for cancellations made after that date unless the seat can be filled by a waitlisted person.
