ASCH Webinar: Creatively Transforming A Potentially Challenging Clinical Situations Into Therapeutic Moments

Presenter: Stephen Lankton, LCSW, DAHB, FASCH | Duration: 90 Minutes

Zoom

In his teaching and writings, Milton Erickson illustrated and shared several uncommon exchanges that transformed potentially difficult encounters into valuable therapeutic opportunities.  Some of these, such as confusion technique, speaking the client’s experiential language, and utilization, he managed to carefully explain in his teachings and writings, and others he did not.  Over the course of forty-two years since his death, I’ve clarified, coined names, and outlined some of his unpublished interventions. These include ambiguous function assignment, multiple embedded metaphors, emanated imagery, Ericksonian paradoxical symptom prescription, and others.

Many of these techniques may be overlooked or under-used in treatment. This is especially true for difficult situations which could be turned into therapeutic opportunities using utilization techniques, speaking the client’s language, ambiguous function assignments, paradoxical prescription communications, age progression, etc.  Some of these methods may precede and make hypnosis possible and others are facilitated by the use of hypnosis.  This workshop will present several real-life scenarios of potentially frustrating clients whose challenging behavior was turned into creative therapeutic moments using these techniques.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to work with unusual verbal client behavior into therapeutic movement by speaking the client’s language.
  2. Participants will be able to work with non-verbal clients by using ideomotor responses to multiple embedded metaphoric language.
  3. Participants will be able to work with clients who refuse to only provide expected and rehearsed answers by formulating and using ambiguous function assignments.
  4. Participants will be able to engage clients exhibiting unconventional behavior in the office into useful therapeutic experiences using utilization techniques.
  5. Participants will be able to engage clients who do not seem to really want to change into useful therapeutic experiences by formulating and using Erickson’s paradoxical prescription method.
  6. Participants will be able to help clients who need help preparing for future goals or termination by formulating and using Erickson’s age-progression technique (Lankton’s Emanated Imagery Technique).
