Faculty: 

Mary Ann S. Callen, PsyD
Dr. Callen grew up in the Philadelphia area. She graduated from Temple University Summa Cum Laude and completed her doctorate in an APA accredited program at Immaculata University. Dr. Callen is employed as a Department of the Army Civilian (DAC) psychologist at Redstone Arsenal in AL. She is trained as an Aeromedical Psychologist and previously worked at Ft. Rucker AL, the Home of Army Aviation. Dr. Callen has also worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in specialized PTSD/MST residential and outpatient programs at Sheridan WY, Huntington WV and Coatesville PA. She has presented at APA conventions (2013 and 2014) and has been published in the Journal of Military Psychology. Dr. Callen is an Approved Consultant for the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH).

Louis F. Damis, PhD, ABPP, FASCH
Dr. Damis is a Diplomate with the American Board of Professional Psychology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Health Psychology, the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance, and the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and holds ASCH Certification in Clinical Hypnosis with Consultant Status. Dr. Damis is a Past President of the Florida and Washington DC Societies of Clinical Hypnosis and has taught hypnosis for over 25 years for the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the Florida Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. Dr. Damis has served on the Executive Committee of ASCH and is a Prime Reviewer. He is a Clinical Health Psychologist who established Integrative Health Psychology, PA, in 2003 and specializes in the integration of psychophysiological, mind-body, interpersonal, and experiential therapies to promote physical, emotional, and relational wellness. He maintains a private practice along with his work as an instructor, author, and consultant.

Rick Goodling, MSW, LCSW
Rick Goodling, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker with 40 years of experience in the treatment of individuals, couples, and small groups. Before he began his private practice, Rick was a clinical case manager, psychotherapist, Adult Outpatient Program Manager, and clinical supervisor at Region Ten Community Services Board in Charlottesville, Virginia. He specializes in working with adults seeking treatment for mood disorders (depression, Schizoaffective Disorder, and bipolar disorder), anxiety and panic disorder, insomnia, PTSD, severe and persistent mental illnesses, chemical dependency, emotional trauma, chronic and acute pain, and life transitions. He uses psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral interventions, meditation and mindfulness, and clinical hypnosis. Rick is currently running 2 pain management groups and a men's group for treatment of severe mood disorders and emotional trauma.

Akira Otani, DdD, ABPH
Otani is a psychologist in private practice in Annapolis, Maryland. He was on the graduate faculty at the Johns Hopkins Univeristy School of Education and senior staff psychologist at the University of Maryland at College Park Counseling Center.  He spent four months in Japan to study Buddhist meditation in 2016.  He published nine books (all in Japanese) and more than 60 journal articles (both in English and Japanese).

Jennifer Swaim, Ph.D
Dr. Swaim is a licensed psychologist and practice consultant who specializes in supporting individuals pursuing the best possible functioning in their professional and personal lives. Dr. Swaim is a member of the American Psychological Association, Is an Approved Consultant and educator for The American Society for Clinical Hypnosis and is Board Certified in General Biofeedback by the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America. In addition to her expertise in applied human factors, she holds an MBA in Health Care.  Her Medical Psychology practice currently focuses on work with individuals with chronic pain, biomedical ethics and peak performance/positive psychology. Previous areas of specialization have included rehabilitation psychology, consultation/liason psychology, presurgical psychological evaluations, and psychogenic disorders.

Mary Wells, PhD
Dr. Mary Wells is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been in practice for over 30 years in the areas of rehabilitation and pain management. She completed her graduate work at The George Washington University and started her career at the Washington Pain and Rehabilitation Center in Washington DC. She went from there to VCU Health System in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as a rehab psychologist, providing services to a full range of rehabilitation patients on both the inpatient and outpatient service. She left VCU to work in an interdisciplinary pain clinic in the community, and later went into private practice. In 2000, she joined the medical psychology department at Sheltering Arms Hospital, first as a staff psychologist and later as director of the department, a post she held for 10 years.  She has recently returned to the VCU Dept. of PMR and is currently working as part of an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System to provide services to patients with chronic pain due to a variety of medical conditions. She provides evaluations and psychological treatment for management of chronic pain.

Monica Wong, MSW, RSW, HBCE  
Mrs. Wong’s interest in hypnosis started during her undergraduate work. She later became a member of Alberta Association of Clinical Hypnosis and is now the president elect of the association. She runs a small private practice and started her hypnosis journey, learning how to utilize hypnosis for birth, fertility and mental health. She is just as fascinated and in love with hypnosis now, if not more, then when she first learned HypnoBirthing for herself and her clients. More recently, she has begun to expand outside her work with clients to help other therapists learn how to utilize hypnosis as part of their clinical practice. She appreciates empowering individuals and clinicians through hypnosis and is honored to be a part of ASCH’s training team.

Clinical Workshop Level 1
Why pursue training in Clinical Hypnosis? What are the benefits?

Level 1 workshop is the first of two workshops in the ASCH certification program.  It is designed for licensed health professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, dentists, counselors, social workers, and those in related fields. The workshop is a mix of didactic presentations, demonstrations, experiential exercises, and faculty-led small group practice focused on the principles and processes of hypnotic inductions, suggestions, and treatments.  It is designed to meet the needs and learning styles of each participant. At the conclusion of the workshop participants will have been taught the basic skills required to utilize clinical hypnosis and begin to apply it to their practice.

Clinical Workshop Level 2
What are the advantages of more training in Clinical Hypnosis?  

The second step in certification training is to strengthen skills, strategies, and applications of clinical hypnosis. Part one taught “how to” do clinical hypnosis, and part two builds on this skill set and refines and furthers development to add the when, why, and where to the “how-to”.

Advantages:

This workshop expands the participants skill set and builds greater confidence in the use of hypnosis. It prepares the participant to move on to Advanced (Skills) Workshops and Individual Consultation to build a greater understanding of principles and advance one’s skill level.

Workshop Capacities:

Level 1 capacity is set at 30 and Level 2 capacity at 25 to ensure participants are given the opportunity for active participation and provided the required attention and oversight by faculty, especially in small group activities. 

Typical Workshop Schedule: 

In-Person:  Workshops typically begin Thursday at 6:30 pm (local time) and end on Sunday at 12:00 pm (local time).  Expect a full day of sessions on Friday and Saturday beginning around 8:30-9:00 am local time and ending before 7:00 pm.

Registration Instructions:

On-line registration will take you to the new ASCH site and require a new account set-up (non-members) or Member login.  If you are an ASCH member enter the email address associated with your ASCH Membership as our UserID; click Forgot Password to set a new password. 

Payments can now be made in a secure online environment.  The system DOES NOT save credit card information once the transaction has been completed and registration submitted.    

General Information:

Workshop Material.  Approximately one week before the workshop, registered participants will receive a link to a private webpage that will include links to handouts and resource materials.  This access will be good for seven days after the workshop has been completed.  Note: workshop handouts can be approximately 200+ pages for Level 1 and  150+ pages for Level 2. Participants are responsible for downloading and printing workshop materials. 

Continuing Education Hours.  On-time attendance, full engagement, and completion of the daily program evaluations are required for a Certificate of Completion. The workshop is approved for 20.0 -  21.5 hrs.   

Changing Dates.  ASCH will honor one registration transfer.  Transfer requests must be made in writing, by emailing education@asch.net, a minimum of fourteen (14) working days in advance of the workshop start date.  Changes made after the fourteen windows will be treated as a cancellation.

Credit Card Payments.  All registrations must be made online. Credit card payments must be completed a minimum of three weeks before the start date.  The ASCH Registrar will send reminders of the due date will in advance.  The Registrants seat will be relinquished if payment is not received by the stated due date.

Cancellations.  Cancellations must be made in writing, by emailing education@asch.net, a minimum of seven (7) working days in advance of the workshop start date.  No cancellations will be taken by phone. The registration fee, minus a $50 administrative fee will be processed. No refund will be made after the seven working day window.

Clinical Workshop Eligibility

Registrants must hold a master's degree or higher in a health care discipline deemed appropriate by the Society from a college or university accredited by its appropriate regional accrediting body. In addition, registrants must be licensed or certified in the state in which they practice.

Registered Nurses with a bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by its appropriate regional accrediting body who are licensed or certified in the state in which they practice are eligible to attend the Level 1 Workshop on Clinical Hypnosis.

Students enrolled full-time in master's level or higher programs are eligible to attend at a reduced rate. Students must have completed a minimum of one full semester of the program and must submit proof of full-time enrollment at an ACE-approved institution of higher education on school letterhead that clearly identifies the individual’s program of study, area of concentration (if applicable), level of degree pursued and date of intended graduation.

Full-time residents or interns participating in a recognized residency or internship program may also register to attend at a reduced rate. Residents/interns need to submit correspondence from their supervisor on official letterhead explaining the nature of the residency/internship and the date of intended completion of the program.

Workshop CME & ASCH Continuing Education (CE) Credits

The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis-Education and Research Foundation (ASCH-ERF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis-Education and Research Foundation (ASCH-ERF) designates this live activity for a maximum of 21.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ASCH-ERF is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. ASCH-ERF maintains responsibility for the regional workshops. The ASCH Standards of Training Committee has approved all regional workshops as meeting the twenty hours required for membership and certification requirements.

Courses approved by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis are approved continuing education courses per Florida's AC-Rule 64B-4-6002 for Social Workers, Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists in the State of Florida.
