Breaking Up Hypnosis into Parts: A Scientific Exploration of the Multifaceted View of Hypnotic Phenomena (AGD #130)

Presenter: Mathieu Landry, Ph.D.

Delivered via Zoom - Start Time is Eastern Time

Despite long-standing efforts to unravel the underlying mechanisms of hypnotic phenomena, they mostly remain elusive to the scientific and clinical communities as evidenced by ongoing debates about the interpretation of key findings in the literature. Clearly, hypnosis is complex and does not lend itself easily to a reductionist approach, which challenges future advances.

This discussion will focus on the centrality of top-down regulation processes and their corresponding neural networks, while also emphasizing how the content of suggestions and mental imagery serve as guides towards specific outcomes. In sum, we will stress how these different components shape the emergence of hypnotic phenomena and highlight the latest relevant findings in the cognitive neuroscience of hypnosis.

Learning Objectives:

After participating in this program physicians and other mental health professionals should be able to:

Mathieu Landry, Ph.D.

Dr. Mathieu Landry completed his Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience at McGill University. Broadly, his research explores how cognition (e.g., attention, anticipation, executive control) shapes consciousness (i.e., how we subjectively experience the world and our own mind). His work has primarily focused on the overlapping dynamics between attention, perception, and metacognition, while he also investigated and published several papers on hypnosis and suggestions. His research combines different methodologies and techniques, including neurophysiological recording such as electro- and magnetoencephalography, experimental strategies from the fields of psychophysics and cognitive psychology, and various analytical strategies from statistics, computational modeling, machine learning.

Describe findings in the literature that highlight the involvement of each component in the context of hypnosis. Identify and classify neuroimaging findings in light of the multifaceted view of hypnosis. Evaluate how the multifaceted view of hypnosis provides insights for helping patients produce more efficient responses in the clinical context. CE:  This webinar is eligible for 1.5 hours of ASCH CE.
