Dr. Dan Handel joined Denver Health as the founding Chief of Palliative Medicine in August 2013, and initiated an inpatient consultation service which is experiencing rapid growth in all hospital areas. He is board certified in Family Practice and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and following his early retirement from the National Institutes of Health, he moved to Colorado to found the Palliative Medicine Division at Denver Health Medical Center and Professor at University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dan directed NIH’s palliative medicine training fellowship since its inception as one of the first eleven programs in the country. Dr. Handel previously served as hospice medical director where he helped found and direct a free-standing inpatient hospice hospital, and founded an academic palliative medicine hospital service.

In this session, Dr. Handel will explore hypnotic interventions and specific strategies for weaving suggestion into medical settings, and will give specific examples of brief, “just in time” approaches to address acute pain and anxiety, chronic pain, and progressive symptoms associated with advanced or terminal illness. Techniques will include hypnotic relaxation; sensory modification such as analgesia or anesthesia or dissociation of the affected body part; distraction; temporal manipulation such as dissociation from pain experience, time distortion, time progression or regression; suggestions to modify one's relationship to the pain experience (such as Meares’ awareness of pain experience without intent to change); and rehabilitation approaches to improve performance and lessen dread. He will discuss methodology to incorporate future-focused imaging to build confidence/expectancy and use of motivational interviewing skills as well.

At the end of this presentation participants will:

  • understand the tactical use of language and suggestion in clinical acute and chronic pain management through the informal use of hypnotic techniques;
  • learn to utilize pacing and leading in giving suggestion during clinical interaction with patients; and
  • learn specific hypnotic strategies through clinical case studies where hypnotic interventions significantly aided symptom management in difficult clinical situations.
