Stephen Gilligan, Ph.D., is a psychologist who received his doctorate from Stanford University. He was a long time student of Milton Erickson, and in his late teens he started participating in training groups conducted by Dr. Erickson. On the basis of this work he developed Self-Relations Psychotherapy and Generative Psychotherapy. In 2004, he received the rarely given Lifetime Achievement Award from the Erickson Foundation in honor of his many contributions. He is well-known throughout the world for his inspirational teaching   He has published extensively, and his books include the Therapeutic Trances: The cooperation principle in Ericksonian hypnotherapy, The courage to love: Principles and practices of Self-relations psychotherapy, The Legacy of Erickson, Walking in two worlds, and The Hero’s Journey (w/ R. Dilts). His most recent book, Generative Trance: The experience of creative flow, proposes and explores a third-generation approach to hypnotic work. DESCRIPTION

Stephen Gilligan is one of the finest therapists and integrative thinkers in the world of psychotherapy. His contributions to the field of psychotherapy are a continuing work in progress, and his ongoing consultation groups continue to challenge and inspire therapists at all levels of experience.

In this special 90-minute webinar, Dr. Stephen Gilligan will present his latest work of Systemic Trance, which organizes around the premise that we generate our realities via the mostly unconscious maps of who we are, and what the world is. These systemic filters can be held negatively (in neuro-muscular lock) or generatively (in creative flow), resulting in either problems or positive solutions. To transform problems into resources, Systemic Trance first identifies the key parts of a performance map—intention/goals, resources, obstacles and symptoms, and self-connection methods—and then uses generative trance to open a fluid conversational space where each part is positively valued and integrated into a resource pattern. Generative Trance offers a framework for the development of states of higher consciousness from which deep, transformational change may emerge. Participants will learn to weave together the unique resources of both the conscious minds and unconscious minds in a way that bypasses resistance and goes far beyond symptom amelioration. Lecture, demonstration, case examples and Q&A will be included.

Attendees will learn how to identify each part of an identity system, move it into its positive form(s), and then integrate the multiple (sometimes contradictory) parts into a Holon, defined in this case as an element that is simultaneously a whole and a part of a larger relational field. Generative Trance is a means by which these transformational shifts can happen. Generative Trance is a “special learning state” that can fluidly hold all the different parts of a system in a “quantum field of infinite possibilities,” such that negatively conditioned systems and processes can be released, and generative systems can be born.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

Upon completion of this webinar attendees will be able to:

  1. identify and describe the underlying mechanism of “neuromuscular lock” vs. “creative flow” as the basis for whether experiences become negative or positive;
  2. identify and describe six basic dimensions of an identity map;
  3. use at least two of these dimensions to induce and therapeutically work with a client using clinical trance; and
  4. describe three ways that persistent negative patterns (experiences or behaviors) can be transformed into positive resources.
