ASCH and its affiliate, the ASCH-Education and Research Foundation, jointly sponsor basic, intermediate and advanced level instruction through our professional training in clinical hypnosis. These Regional Workshops are held four to six times a year. ASCH makes every effort to hold workshops in all regions of the US.

Basic level instruction provides individuals with an opportunity to develop clinical hypnosis skills that are directly applicable to their clinical practice.

Intermediate level instruction allows individuals the opportunity to refine their clinical hypnosis skills.

Advanced level workshops are topical. Recent professional training workshops have focused on behavioral medicine, health psychology, hypnosis and pediatrics, and mind-body medicine.

Participants are encouraged to attend these workshops in sequence in order to make the most of each workshop. Skills mastered in the basic and intermediate levels are essential to fully benefiting from the advanced level workshops.

Individualized Consultation Workshop

An Individualized Consultation Workshop is being offered by ASCH on July 31 - August 2, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA.  (See PDF of program)

Individualized Consultation (IC) is offered for those health and mental health care practitioners interested in enhancing their knowledge and expertise in the use of hypnosis.  This 20-hour intensive meeting is designed to fulfill the requirements for attaining ASCH Certification in Clinical Hypnosis or to obtain the hours of consultation necessary to become an Approved Consultant.

Individuals attending this program must have completed an ASCH-approved Basic and Intermediate Workshop and should be using hypnosis in their professional practice.

This workshop is unique among ASCH’s educational offerings.  The format is one in which participants meet and consult in a small group setting with fellow practitioners and a group of facilitators who are ASCH Approved Consultants.  This model encourages participants to learn from one another, to have their own expertise affirmed and expanded, and to network with other professionals in clinical hypnosis. During the twenty hours of consultation the focus is on issues unique to each practitioners’ specialties and practices. Consultation is done in a small group, usually comprised of no more than 6 people. The groups are heterogeneous as to discipline (medicine, psychology, dentistry, social work; etc.) and gender. Group process plays a key role in this type of training while meeting the specific needs of each participant. This diversity in grouping encourages participants to focus their attention on refining techniques and skills in a context of interdisciplinary learning about the mind/body considerations in the application of clinical hypnosis.

Each small group remains together during the 20 hours with the occasional opportunity for a self-selected group based upon topic. In such groups, participants will have the opportunity to enhance utilization techniques and to address specific uses of hypnosis in behavioral medicine, pain management, obstetrics and gynecology, children and adolescents, trauma, DID, chronic illness and/or palliative care.   Actual topics discussed will be determined by attendee learning contracts.

The depth of learning in the Consultation model of training is directly related to the level of involvement of the participants.  Participants are required to bring:

  • Audio or videotapes and/or typed transcripts of their work with clients using clinical hypnosis - please follow appropriate standards of practice for permission for these recordings and privacy of your clients; and

  • A copy of their training file and/or application for Certification or Certification as an Approved Consultant.

These materials are used to explore and deepen their understanding and application of hypnosis.  This is training and consultation, not testing.  At the same time, participants have a superb opportunity to receive feedback, input and creative suggestions from their professional peers.  Many participants have indicated that they emerged from the Consultation with clear and precise options for increasing their effectiveness in the application of clinical hypnosis to their existing practices.

For more information about the IC Workshop or the certification process, contact Elizabeth Kasper, Director of Membership and Certification, at 630-980-4740 or email her at certification@asch.net.

Mutter Foundation Tuition Grants

The Charles B. and Elaine Mutter Foundation funds Regional Workshops for students, resident/interns, and ASCH members with financial limitations. The grants fund up to fifty percent of workshop tuition. For further information, contact the ASCH Central Office.

Virginia Hypnosis Society Fund

In the fall of 2003, the Virginia Hypnosis Society, upon its dissolution, kindly donated $9,744.49 to ASCH-ERF for the establishment of a fund designed to provide scholarships to applicants from regionally accredited graduate schools in an appropriate discipline. Students need not be residents of Virginia, but simply be attending an institution of higher learning located in Virginia. Grants will be for the entire workshop fee, and applicants do not need to demonstrate financial need. This fund will work exactly like the Mutter Fund, in which applicants request funding and provide a letter from their advisor or department head. Funds are available for upcoming workshops. Interested persons should contact Emma Leighton at eleighton@asch.net or 630/980-4740.

Accreditation/Continuing Education Credits

The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis-Education and Research Foundation is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. ASCH-ERF designates regional workshops as meeting criteria for 20 hours in Category I of the Physician’s Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

ASCH-ERF is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. ASCH-ERF maintains responsibility for the regional workshops. The ASCH Standards of Training Committee has approved all regional workshops as meeting the twenty hours required for membership and certification requirements.

ASCH-ERF is approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences to offer CE credit to MFTs and LCSWs.

ASCH-ERF is recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors to offer continuing education for National Certified Counselors. We adhere to NBCC Continuing Education Guidelines.

Courses approved by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis are approved continuing education courses per Florida's AC-Rule 64B-4-6002 for Social Workers, Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists in the State of Florida.

ASCH applies to the NASW for continuing education approval for each workshop. Approval status is posted on the website once it has been received.

ASCH-ERF is designated as an approved PACE program provider by the Academy of General Dentistry. The formal continuing education programs of this program provider are accepted by AGD for Fellowship, Mastership, and membership maintenance credit.  Approval does not imply acceptance by a state or provincial board of dentistry or AGD endorsement. The current term of approval extends from 10/1/2007 to 9/30/2011.

If you have any questions about obtaining credit from other CE providers,  please contact Emma Leighton, Workshop Coordinator.

Eligibility

ASCH continuing education programs are open to persons holding doctoral degrees in dentistry, medicine, psychology, podiatric medicine, and chiropractic medicine, and persons holding a minimum of a masters degree in social work, marriage and family counseling, clinical or counseling psychology, nursing, and speech language pathology who are licensed by the state/province in which they practice. Graduate students in these disciplines are also eligible, but must provide proof of their status in an appropriate program accredited by an ACE-recognized accrediting group.

Requirements for Approval of External Programs

Effective immediately, all programs seeking ASCH approval for continuing education credits towards membership or certification will need to complete a formal submission to ASCH’s Standards of Training Committee.

To receive ASCH approval, all component sections, ASCH approved consultants/certified professionals, universities, individuals, etc., must submit an Approval Request Form.  Once the program has been approved, a formal approval letter will be sent to the program director which can be shared with participants wishing to use the credit for ASCH.

The Approval Request Form is a MS Word form, and can be easily completed and submitted electronically as an e-mail attachment.  You can download the form by clicking here, or you can contact Elizabeth Kasper directly to request a copy of the form at certification@asch.net.  If you have any questions, you can reach Elizabeth by phone at (630) 980-4740.

We recommend that all ASCH members and ASCH certified professionals verify formal program approval with either the program director of the training or with the ASCH Central Office before you register for a training program that you wish to use for membership or renewal of your certification.  A list of the ASCH approved programs can be obtained by sending a request to Elizabeth at certification@asch.net.
